The report
On the evening of 29 December 1980 Betty Cash, Vickie Landrum and Landrum's grandson Colby were driving from Dinner towards Dayton, Texas, near Huffman, when they reported a bright light that became a large diamond-shaped object hovering over the road and giving off flames and intense heat. They said the object rose and was accompanied by a large number of helicopters, which Cash and Landrum took to be military; some were later identified by the witnesses as tandem-rotor Chinooks. Afterwards all three reported nausea, vomiting and sunburn-like symptoms, and Cash's condition was serious. They sued the United States government, but the case was dismissed in 1986, and the Army's Inspector General found no evidence that the helicopters belonged to the armed forces. Sceptics have suggested a mirage of the star Canopus and questioned the medical evidence, and the location of the event is itself uncertain; there is no conclusive explanation.
